Sweden’s industry is facing a crucial transition. To replace fossil natural gas with sustainable biogas, at least 10 TWh of biogas will be needed by 2030 – a fivefold increase from today’s production. Last week, the Industry Biogas Commission submitted its final report “More Biogas for Industry! Package of Measures for Industrial Material Transition and Competitiveness” to the government.
A sharp increase in biogas production would bring several societal benefits:
▪️ Climate transition – Replacing 10 TWh of natural gas with biogas would reduce emissions by 2.5 million tons of CO₂, equivalent to the entire Swedish aviation sector.
▪️ Competitiveness & welfare – A green industry strengthens Sweden’s global position and creates long-term jobs.
▪️ Security of supply – Increased domestic production reduces dependence on uncertain external deliveries.
▪️ Circularity & resource efficiency – Biogas production enables the conversion of waste and by-products into energy, raw materials, and plant nutrients.
